Orthopaedic Institute
"The Orthopaedic Institute Charity were thrilled to receive a visit from the members of The Grace Trust, allowing us to introduce one of the latest research projects to take place here at the RJAH Hospital. Following a recent grant request, the trustees kindly awarded the sum of £3,000 to the Orthopaedic Institute Charity towards the purchase of a new specialist Low Temperature (-86oC) Freezer for the research laboratories. The freezer will enable the establishment of a Metabolic Bone Biobank for Osteoporosis Research which will be undertaken by Dr Chadi Rakieh and his colleagues in the Specialist Metabolic Bone Service Department, including Dr Claire Mennan & Diane Powell. Dr Chadi Rakieh said 'Osteoporosis is a major public health issue that makes bones weaker and more likely to break. Understanding the metabolic changes associated with osteoporosis is critical for developing effective treatments. The biobank will contain samples of blood, plasma and serum from patients attending RJAH, dedicated to osteoporosis and bone research. Keeping these samples very cold is essential for studying biomarkers, which are small biological molecules involved in disease development, progression and response to treatment. The biobank will facilitate high-quality research into osteoporosis, advancing our knowledge and potentially leading to breakthroughs in patient care.' ”
